Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 6217 – Hubble Space Telescope Image
NGC 6217 gathers the eye around a brilliant yellow-white centre, its barred spiral form unfolding into broad arms of blue and pink against deep black space. Fine crimson threads and compact points of light stipple the arms, while their outer reaches become progressively fainter and more diffuse. At a distance of up to 90 million light-years, the galaxy appears both coherent and intricately unsettled: a bright central structure surrounded by layers of curved, mottled light.
This Hubble view is notable not only for its subject, but for its place in the telescope’s observational story. NGC 6217 was the first celestial object imaged with the newly repaired Advanced Camera for Surveys after the instrument was restored during the STS-125 Servicing Mission. The observations, made on 13 June and 8 July 2009, formed part of the camera’s initial testing and calibration.
The resulting image has a striking concentration. The luminous core acts as a visual anchor, but much of its character lies farther out, where the arms fragment into bright knots, slender wisps and softer patches of colour. Beyond them, the sparse background leaves the galaxy suspended within a generous field of darkness.
A closer look
Near the centre, warm gold is enclosed by denser pink and blue structures. Slight variations within this intensely bright region prevent it from appearing smooth: light gathers in uneven ridges and pockets before turning into the more open curvature of the spiral arms.
Along the left-hand arm, a chain of small bright points traces part of the galaxy’s sweep. Towards the outer edges, vivid blue gives way to darker, quieter tones, and the structure begins to dissolve into the surrounding black. On the right, faint pinkish filaments trail from the brighter material with an almost threadlike delicacy. These details become especially apparent at a large scale, where the arms read not as simple bands but as complex assemblies of light and shadow.
Small white points are scattered through the field, particularly towards the upper portion and right edge. A faint streak also appears in the lower-left region. They remain visually subordinate to NGC 6217, yet give the dark surroundings texture and depth without distracting from the galaxy’s concentrated brilliance.
How this image was made
The Hubble Space Telescope observed NGC 6217 with its Advanced Camera for Surveys on two dates in 2009. The camera had recently been returned to operation during the STS-125 Servicing Mission, and these observations were undertaken as part of its early testing and calibration. Rather than representing a single photographic instant, the finished view derives from observations made on 13 June and 8 July.
The official source does not specify the filters or colour-mapping method for this release. The blues, pinks, crimson accents and warm central light are therefore best understood here as features of the finished astronomical image, without assuming how closely they correspond to unaided human vision.

Choosing the right size and finish
Fine art can feel intimate at smaller sizes and more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to judge the scale of the piece in your space.
For exact dimensions, specialist framing or a larger project, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original for colour that remains faithful to the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer antique character. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, reduced reflections and safer delivery. They arrive professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available; contact our workshop if the exact option you need is not listed.
